2011.... What does the new year hold for you?

It won't surprise you to know that 'losing weight' and 'getting fit' are consistently at the top of most peoples new year resolutions.

The problem is that this may be at the top of someone's new year resolutions for many years to come as they don't know where to start or start with good intentions only for it to grind to a halt after a short time.

Only a small percentage of gym members regularly go to the gym and a large proportion join in January only to stop going a short while afterwards.

This is mainly due to boredom and lack of goal setting. It takes a certain mind set to be relentless about your training and diet but that is the only way that you will achieve what you are looking for.

Set yourself specific goals for short and long term and change your training techniques and routine after 6 to 8 weeks to keep it interesting. Remember this is a lifestyle you are looking for and not a short term solution.

Further Training...

This year I have set a few goals for myself. I am furthering my Martial Arts training and working with a great martial artist and teacher, Steve Payne from the Bob Breen Academy and hope to grade for my next belt this year.

This year I have also started Judo at Surrey's Camberley Judo club training with Great Britain international Vince Skillcorn and learning a totally new set of skills which is taking me well out of my comfort zone.

Of course no year would be complete without a marathon and I will be running the Edinburgh marathon in May... oh how quickly you forget the pain of the previous one!

Stroke rehabilitation...

At the end of last year I did some work with the ARNI trust (Action for Rehabilitation from Neurological Injury) started by the inspirational founder and chief instructor Tom Balchin. It came about through Milestones Neurorehabilitation.

This was a great way to learn about stroke rehabilitation techniques and offered a very hands on approach and was very rewarding I will be doing some further work to help out with some ARNI rehabilitation classes in the coming year.

For more information on ARNI please visit www.arni.uk.com. In June I will be starting the 'Excercise and Fitness Training After Stroke' course with later life training, helping to develop and give me further training to help with stroke rehabilitation clients.
